Mad Cow disease was recognized by the German scientists Hans G. Creutzfeld and Alfons Jakob in the mid-1990s as the cause of Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which is obtained by eating meat or other products from cattle infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The disease was first transmitted to cows through altered cattle feed.
